Abstract
To perform seismic reinforcement for traditional wooden structures, it is essential to evaluate the seismic performance precisely in advance. In this paper, the seismic performance of wooden structures is evaluated by using a simple method that can estimate the maximum displacement response by tracing the bearing capacity-deformation relationships of wooden frame in wide range of deformation under a given seismic response spectrum. A design method of seismic reinforcement based on the seismic performance is also proposed. As a case study, the seismic reinforcement of an existing old temple is illustrated herein. The seismic reinforcement techniques actually employed here are reported in detail. To verify the effect of seismic reinforcement, the seismic performance of the reinforced structure is compared with that of the original structure. The proposed procedure for the seismic reinforcement has advantages of effectively profiting the deformability and toughness of wooden frames and of easily applying existing traditional old wooden structures.
