Abstract
Exposed-type steel column bases are widely used in low-rise building construction and studied by many researchers to identify their stiffness and strength, but the studies are restricted to in-plane behaviors so far. This paper presents inelastic behaviors of square hollow column bases under bi-axial bending experimentally. Two types of failure modes are considered: Anchor bolt yielding type and base plate yielding type. Different manners in pinching effects and interaction surfaces for bi-axial bending are observed for these two modes during bi-axial cyclic loading tests.
