Abstract

In this research, the problems concerning the structural analysis aspects for establishing steel foundation beams in practical use are discussed. At present, foundation beams for steel structures are constructed from reinforced concrete, and in the structural analysis, due to their high rigidity, we can assume they are rigid, enabling separate analysis of the upper structure and foundation. This simplification, however, may not be possible when they are more flexible as is the case with steel foundation beams. To resolve this difficulty we introduce a simple and precise method to analyze a whole structure from pile foundation to upper structure based on which the effects of foundation beam rigidity on the linear elastic behavior of the structure are investigated, focusing on the bending moment and rotation angle of the pile top. An equation to judge whether the foundation beam can be assumed rigid or not will be proposed.
