Abstract

In order to enhance energy dissipation of precast prestressed structures with keeping their small residual deformation, the previously proposed Graded Composite Strand (GCS) has been modified to develop a new type of GCS (GCS-U) which has an unbonded high strength 7-wire strand surrounded by bonded twelve mild steel wires. Three precast portal frame specimens with GCS-U, normal bonded and unbonded strands were designed by the capacity spectrum method and commonly used guidelines, and statically tested to confirm the efficiency of GCS-U. Three specimens showed sufficient stiffness and ductility, and limited damage concentrated at the precast member ends, and crack widths and residual deformations were kept very small. The specimen with GCS-U dissipated energy as much as that with bonded strands, and had intermediate residual deformation between those of bonded and unbonded specimens. The frame analysis in which potential plastic hinges have tri-linear restoring force characteristics, was able to simulate envelope curves of experimental lateral force-displacement relations
