Abstract
To perform structural health monitoring over a long period, intelligent sensors with high durability and superior sensing ability are needed. In this paper, the suitability of PVDF strain sensors, developed by utilizing highly durable PVDF films, for structural health monitoring is discussed. The results of this study show that PVDF strain sensors are adaptive to dynamic monitoring of civil engineering structures because of the superior and stable sensitivity over 0.5-10 Hz, high linearity, easy fabrication and installation. Furthermore, PVDF sensors can catch instantaneous signals of crack initiation and propagation. The signals on crack caught gotten from PVDF are useful for structural safety evaluation and damage location, which are the key problems in structural health monitoring.
