Abstract

In this study, basic principles on curriculum construction could be extracted from the theoretical foundation on the "creating new scientific knowledge". The steps undertaken were as follows : 1. Ideas on "excellence" in science education were reviewed and its meaning could be defined as "creating new scientific knowledge" in this study. 2. Theories on the "creating new scientific knowledge" were reviewed in terms of definition of creativity, contemporary concept of competencies and psychological background of problem solving. Based on such theories, the learning contents had been developed and implemented, that intended to develop the reasoning and knowledge application skills required in solving problems. Description of major characteristics in constructing the learning contents could be applicable as basic principles. 3. Philosophy on the "creating new scientific knowledge" in science education could be seen as a paradigm shift from the traditional one, that is, transmitting solid knowledge. Based on such philosophy, the model curriculum had been drafted, that intended to correlate and integrate between learning of science and doing science. Description of major characteristics in constructing the model curriculum could be applicable as basic principles. 4. Several principles extracted from above could be organized into a unified theoretical framework for curriculum construction toward the "creating new scientific knowledge" as concluding remarks.
