Abstract

DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) film holds promise to a lot of machine elements as a hard thin film with an excellent frictional property and wear resistance. We focused on surrounding atmospheric effects on tribological characteristics of DLC film. DLC film was synthesized by PBII&D (Plasma Based Ion Implantation & Deposition) method. Tribological properties were evaluated in air, decompression hydrogen and high vacuum condition by using a ball-on-disk sliding tester. As a result, lower friction coefficients were shown in the vacuum and the hydrogen condition though steady friction behavior was shown in the air. Wear property also changed by the atmospheric conditions.
