Abstract

Vegetable oil has an excellent biodegradability. Therefore, it holds promise as an environment-friendly lubricant. Vegetable oil has superior characteristics such as film strength is strong; viscosity index is high. However, applications of the vegetable oil have not advanced, due to low anti-oxidation and performance stability and few basic data. Therefore, we aim to evaluate basic sliding characteristics of the vegetable oil. In order to investigate a load carrying capacity and seize resistance of the vegetable oil, a friction examination was performed using a four-ball sliding tester. Lubricants used in the test are vegetable derived lubricant, edible vegetable oil and mineral lubricant. From experimental results, vegetable oil showed an excellent tribological characteristic compared to mineral lubricant. Moreover, the unsaturated fatty acids contained in the vegetable oil influence seize resistance.
