Abstract

This paper analyzes Kawaii concept used in Japanese pop culture from the viewpoint of "Uncanny Valley Hypothesis." Uncanny Valley Hypothesis, which was originated in the field of robotics, says that as the appearance of a robot is made more human, the observer's emotinal response will become increasingly positive until the likeness reaches a point where slight imperfections become emphasiezed, and when the likeness goes over the point, the response turns overwhelmingly negative. The dip in the graph of the emotional response is called as "uncanny vally." This paper argues that Kawaii concept can be attributed to products located in the hill just before the uncanny valley.
