This paper surveys the discussions on the history of money in European medieval and early-modern times. In these times, gold, silver, and copper coins were used to denominate and settle commercial transactions. As the economy developed, most countries and regions faced the problem of monetary shortages due to the limited supply of gold and silver bullion and the high cost of coinage for copper coins. Debasement of silver coins was adopted as a common measure, and hampered monetary circulation. We found that government and private sector efforts to cope with these problems led to the emergence of (a) the dual currency system, or separation of payment media for overseas and domestic transactions; (b) the use of money of account for bookkeeping and settling large transactions; and (c) the establishment of the central funds settlement institution via exchange bills across the European countries.
