The evaluation of the specific binding characteristics for bone-associated cytokines on the titanium (Ti) surfaces may serve to clarify the mechanism of osseointegration in the early stage of implant placement. This study evaluated the binding behavior of chemokine CXCL12/SDF-1 on the surface-modified Ti sensors using a quartz crystal microbalance. The results showed that surface modification with the atmospheric pressure plasma, UV and NaOH solution increased the specific binding of CXCL12 adsorption compared to non-treated Ti sensor, suggesting that these modifications may enhance the migration of mesenchymal stem cells to Ti implants in the bone marrow.
