Abstract

Majority of microbial species are fastidious because of their complex nutritional requirement or almost impossible to cultivate. In concert with the development of molecular techniques that allows identification of microorganisms without the need to cultivate them, growing attention has been paid to the diversity of microorganisms on this planet. In this context, invertebrates that provide peculiar habitat for various symbiotic microorganisms are of great interest. Isopods are considered to originate from marine environment but many of the isopod species, particularly those belonging to the suborder Oniscidea, are successfully inhabiting terrestrial environment. In contrast to insects, isopods are not well studied for their endosymbiotic microorganisms. Here, I review the current knowledge about the diversity of endosymbiotic microorganisms in isopods and try to encourage future studies.
