Abstract

The "communist heritages" are defined as relics in Eastern Europe from the socialist period which are regarded to be preserved. But the period has been generally considered by Czech and Polish as that of dictatorship and Soviet compulsory rule, giving rise to their negative, or at least ambivalent, feelings. Therefore, whether communist heritages should be preserved or not remains ontroversial. This paper takes mainly Poruba which lies in the suburbs of Ostrava, Czech, as an example, and shows that foreign tourists have come to regard it as a tourist attraction, because it is a town of Staliniststyle mass housing where they can have experiences different from those in their native countries. In addition, the fact that socialist realism partially adopted indigenous culture has helped Czech look upon Poruba as a national heritage to be preserved.
