Abstract
In our information-oriented society, it has been often said that literature is now almost obsolete. But from my viewpoint as a kokugo teacher, its historical and cultural role has not ended yet. Certainly literature is a medium far slower in transmitting messages than present-day information technology, but for the very reason its "slow information" will give us a chance to critically think of today's desperate struggle to obtain quicker information.
