Abstract

We examined the understanding for striae gravidarum and the preventive steps of pregnant women before their appearance. We conducted a questionnaire study in 3 obstetrics clinics and analyzed the responses of 65 primiparae and 34 multiparae. We asked about their understanding for striae gravidarum and the presence of preventive steps. We used the five-step responses of "fully agree", "partially agree, "not able to answer", "partially disagree", and "fully disagree", and classified the first 2 together as "agree" and the last 2 together as "disagree". Among the 99 subjects, 91 (91.9%) agreed that "moisturizing is effective to prevent striae gravidarum"; however, less than 20% agreed that "striae gravidarum can be resolved after childbirth with several treatments". Preventive steps against striae gravidarum was shown by 61 (61.6%) (prevention group), but absent in 38 (non-prevention group). The rate of preventive steps in primiparae was higher than that of multiparae, and the preventive steps of multiparae showed no association with their experience of striae gravidarum during the previous pregnancy. Most pregnant women considered that striae gravidarum can be prevented but are difficult to treat after developing, therefore 61.6% of them performed preventive moisturizing before the appearance of striae gravidarum.
