Heterogeneous networks (HetNets) are intended to offer wide area coverage and high data rate transmission by deploying small cells besides macrocells. Device-to-device (D2D) communication as an underlay of cellular network enriches local services and offloads base station traffic. In this paper, we target to improve the data rate for picocell edge users (PEUE) in HetNets, which consists of macrocells and picocells. We propose a cooperative transmission scheme by constructing two transmission paths from picocell to PEUEs using D2D communication. The two transmission paths are the direct transmission from picocell Base Station (BS) to PEUE and a relay-assisted path by means of Device-to-Device (D2D) communication, respectively. Multi-path has been proposed as an important concept in term of robust communication. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing schemes, and achieves considerable system throughput gains in Config.4b scenario defined by 3GPP.
