Abstract

The effects of two-step sintering on the sinterability of powder compacts were examined from a view point of the change in sintering stress and viscosity. Sinter-compression tests were conducted at different constant temperatures for cylindrical specimens of nickel powder compacts which underwent one-step as well as two-step heating. In the two-step heating, the specimens were once heated up 50K higher and kept for 10min before cooling down to the test temperature. There was no distinct tendency of the variation in sintering stress with heating history. Although the relative density was not gained by the two-step heating, the viscosity was increased. The influence of the change in microstructure due to the two-step sintering will be discussed.
