抄録
In this study, we propose a novel electrophoresis system that separates analytes in liquid columns supported on solid substrates and isolates the separated analytes in droplets formed by breakup of the liquid columns. We here demonstrated a liquid column formation by electrocoalescence of droplet array and breakup of the liquid column due to interfacial instability. We explored basic dynamics of electrocoalescence and breakup with a substrate having microfabricated hydrophobic and hydrophilic patterns for supporting droplets. We also theoretically analyzed the electrocoalescence and the stability of the liquid column, and provided critical electric field strength and frequencies for stable column formation.
