In this study, a new analytical procedure on vibrations of a thin walled beam with a concentrated mass is presented. The beam is divided into a few segments with different cross section. Different from the previous analysis, the equation of motion of the beam is formulated as an expression including the axial displacements at nodes of the segments as unknown quantities, which makes it possible to analyze nonlinear problem and to consider the axial inertia force of a concentrated mass. Furthermore, employing this expression and applying the Galerkin procedure, the nonlinear governing equations of the beam are reduced to nonlinear ordinary differential equations of motion in a multiple-degree-of-freedom system. Static deformation, linear natural frequencies and corresponding modes of vibration of the beam and nonlinear periodic responses are calculated including the effects of axial inertia of concentrated masses.
