A stand alone type wearable power assist suit we developed gives nurses the extra muscles they need to lift their patients and avoid back injuries. The suit consists of shoulders, arms, back, waist, hip and legs units to be fitted on the nurse's body. The arms, waist and legs have newly developed rotary actuators consisting of air bags driven directly by micro air pumps supplied by portable batteries. The power assist suit cannot work in narrow space because the linkwork of the waist and the chain of air bags of leg are projecting to the back. For realizing the suit available in the narrow working space, small air bags should be adopted, but it needs an air compressor. Therefore, it cannot become stand alone, but can become practical as the power assist suit in the house which is equipped with an air supply line. This paper reports the development status of a newly streamlined power assist suit by omitting the arm unit and by developing compact waist and leg units.
