Abstract
This study aims to develop a tool-wear condition monitoring system for a punching machine based on the wavelet analysis of the die acceleration responses during the punching process. In the proposed approach, the acceleration response of the die in a turret punch press was measured during a repetitive punching test and analyzed with wavelets whose mother wavelet was the third derivative of the Gaussian function. The signal concentration measure defined from the extrema of the wavelet transform was evaluated to extract the information relevant to the discontinuous event during the punching process which initiated the vibration responses of the die and other parts of the machine structure. Some signal processing issues regarding the wavelet scale selection and signal interpolation were particularly focused.
