Abstract

This paper considers the early-period theology of the prominent sociologist Peter L. Berger. He produced many works on various themes, and theology was particularly notable. From his first publication and in regular works since, Berger has incorporated sociological views into his theology, and therefore understanding it is important when considering his theories on the sociology of religion and his idea of religion in general. To date, however, Berger's theological efforts have basically not been discussed by sociologists of religion. This paper considers his early-period theology while focusing on the concepts of religion, secular(ization), and Christianity found therein. In passing, it should be noted that Berger subsequently reconsidered the framework he used for these concepts, and this was important in the development of his later theology and in the formation of his secularization theory in the sociology of religion. The aim of this paper is to contribute to a deeper understanding of Berger's later theory of religion by examining his early theology from an intellectual history perspective. Accordingly, I would like to emphasize in advance that this paper does not consider the validity of Berger's early-period theology from a theological perspective. Rather, focus is placed on the relationship in this theology between his analyses as a sociologist of religion and his belief as a Christian.
