Abstract

Julian Corbett is one of the greatest British naval historians and maritime strategists.Having received no post-graduate degree in historical or strategic studies, he was highlyregarded as a leading expert on naval issues. Without any experience of serving in thearmed forces, he deeply engaged in the education of the Royal Navy and also worked asan adviser to the top leadership of the Admiralty. After Corbett passed away in 1922, however, he came to be all but forgotten among navalhistorians and strategists in the UK as well as abroad. Despite high reputations duringhis lifetime, Corbett's strategic works have long been under-studied and under-evaluated.In order to deepen our understanding of Corbett's maritime strategy, this article reviews his life and scholarly achievements, thereby stimulating further research on the contemporary significance of his strategic thought.
