Abstract

In this paper the author tries to examine the monetary policy and its background of the feudal silver within the early feudal currency of Kaga-Han. She clarifies them as follows : 1. Kaga-Han's monetary policy of the feudal silver had developed since the middle Genna 元和 Period, and it was established in the 15th year of the Kan'ei 寛永 Period when the rule of the unifying circulation of the Syufu-Gin 朱符銀 was promulgated. Feudal silver of Kaga-Han had degraded before the circulation of the Syufu-Gin and this degradation included the general currency. 2. This general currency had been established through commercial activities, and the system of the division of work was formed through the medium of this currency. So, when the government of Kaga-Han began some economic policies in the middle Kan'ei Period, it had to regard the monetary policy as one of the most important policies. 3. After the operation of economic policies, the government of Kaga-Han started the unifying circulation of high-grade coins, Syufu-Gin. Improving money in quality, the government aimed at building up the blocked feudal market and acquiring money of the Bakufu 幕府 in the domain of Kaga-Han. And then, changes of circumstances within the domain laid the foundation of the transformation into the Chōgin 丁銀 system, which means preparation for penetration of the Bakufu's power.
