Abstract

Searching for the model of simultaneous development in both economic and social sphere is one of the major tasks for the scholars involved in the development studies since the development of one sphere is not easily convertible to that of the other. The case of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the best performer in terms of Human Development　Index in Central Asia provides us with a good testing case for the mechanism of both economic and social development. Examining the performance in economic and social fields through the main indicators, the paper found that Kazakhstan has not fared in social sphere compared to its rapid growth of economy in terms of GDP. It argues that one of the major problem lies in the increasing gap between the rural and urban areas in both terms of economic growth and social well being.
