Abstract

Studies on juvenile physique and physical strength in Okinawa prefecture began in 1937 with a report on over 85,000 Okinawan youth from ages 7 to 16 entitled "Fundamental Survey on Youth Physique in Okinawa Prefecture," and prefectural and other institutions have continued research in the postwar period with such studies as the "Statistical Report on School Hygiene" and the more recent "Report on Juvenile Physique, Physical Ability, and Swimming Skill.' Reports by researchers have also been published featuring comparisons of Okinawan youth with those of mainland Japan.\nWhile much attention in recent health research has been given to the "bi-polar phenomenon", the conditions in Okinawa have not yet been adequately studied and there has been little research considering the influence of psychological factors on physical development and strength.\nThis report aims to address these issues by studying the conditions of the "bi-polar phenomenon" as it relates to Okinawan elementary schoolchildren's physique and physical strength, as well as the relation between interest in physical activity and physical strength.\nThe categories of analysis in which distortions were seen for both girls and boys included weight, sidestepping, 50 meter run, as well as a softball throw and 20 meter shuttle run for girls. The results of the analysis of relation between the motivation inventory of physical education (MIPE) and the above categories revealed a higher correlation among boys than among girls, with physical fitness showing a higher correlation than physical strength. Weight was one of several sub criteria which had a negative correlation with physique.
