This paper focuses on Zeniya no Kinrachi, a major poet of kyōka, or comic verses, which were popular in late 18th to early 19th century Edo. Zeniya was an exchanger of zeni (a sort of pence used in early modern Japan) as well as being an amateur poet who emphasized his vocation in his pseudonym, in his poetry and in several other works. Zeni composed his identity as a kyōka poet because zeni and kyōka poetry enjoyed equal popularity. He was an early example of a commoner who emphasized the presence of commoners in kyōka poetry.
