Abstract

Japanese universities have been providing some services for students with disabilities, mainly visual, hearing or physical disabilities. Support needs of students with developmental disability in higher education have been increasing. There are many unsolved issues on providing supports for university students with developmental disability, such as learning disabilities, ADHD, high functioning autism, although the special support education targeting developmental disabilities started from 2007. We conducted the survey for clarify the status of students with disabilities focusing on developmental disabilities in universities. A questionnaire was sent to 99 universities in Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Shiga and Wakayama prefecture. There were a few identified students with developmental disabilities comparing with sensory or physical disabilities. These students were provided some support, mostly counseling service. Some learning supports were offered by teaching staffs and increasing staffs' understanding in faculty development. However it seems that there were more possible at-risk students in universities. Although universities could offer some accommodations and supports, there were some difficulty to assess and identify developmental disabilities and their needs and to provide appropriate supports, for instance orientation, coaching, providing audio-visual materials and transition services to employment. This survey pointed the importance of overcoming a lack of support, constructing support system and arranging supports and reasonable accommodation in cooperation with related institutes at universities.
