Abstract

There are many patients year after year, who have the complaint of hoarseness. The diseases in the respiratory organs are increasing with the complexicities of the social situations and the changes for the worse in the enviroments. With these several factors, the laryngeal diseases are increasing in the last years, and the pathogenesis is complicating. The 62 patients with laryngeal polyps were investigated statistically in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, University of the Ryukyus Hospital, and the etiological considerations were performed with the bibliographical references. The results were follows: 1) There were 30 patients with vocal polyp, 11 with vocal nodule, and 21 with polypoid degeneration of the vocal cord. Most frequent ages were ranged from 40 to 50 years old. The female patients were more frequently seen than the male (The sex ratio of the male patients to the female was 22 to 40). The vocal polyp was frequently observed in the anterior one-third portion of the membraneous vocal cord. 2) It was assumed that the size of polyps was related with the period from the onset of the symptoms. 3) The polypoid degeneration of the vocal cord was seen also in the female patients, and the most of them had smoked. Therefore, it was assumed that the smoking is a large etiological factor in the female patients to grow a polypoid degeneration of the vocal cord.
