Abstract

The present study investigated the degree of appropriateness of the usage of ‘kinship terms’ and ‘family/given name’ toward seniors by university students in South Korea. Results indicated that university students in South Korea are likely to feel that the use of kinship terms toward their seniors is appropriate whereas the use of family or given name is not. Decision tree analysis indicated that relational distance, followed by speaker’s gender, were the most influential factors in determining the appropriateness of use of kinship terms. In contrast, situation (lecture or chatting), followed by distance, were the most influential factors in determining the appropriateness of use of family or given name. Furthermore, the present study suggested that Korean university students utilize kinship terms toward their seniors to shorten their relational distance, and use family/given name in formal situations rather than informal situations to keep their relational distance.
