Abstract
type:Article
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the educational system since the period of high economic growth, with respect to engineers and skilled individuals. This was carried out through an investigation that involved listening to the opinion of a teacher who retired from a particular industrial high school. The following two points were clarified from this interview. First, the graduates at this industrial high school were comparatively well-off in terms of finding employment. This fact can be gauged from the following remark: “The school did not conduct industrial visits, etc., when the Japanese economy was in recession.” This is not at all surprising, considering the severity of the labor market in recent years, with regard to graduates. Secondarily, in seeking employment, an academic grade does not translate into employment with a prestigious organization. An organization might value not merely academic grades but other abilities (for instance a pleasing personality) as well. Moreover, it has been understood that teachers play an instrumental role in helping students decide on their career options and finding employment.
