Abstract

This paper estimates the total factor productivity (TFP) in the Indian auto industry during the period from 1980s to 2000s by using data drawn from the Central Statistical Organization’s Annual Survey of Industries. The paper uses the semi-parametric estimation technique proposed by [Levinsohn and Petrin 2003] which addresses the endogeneity problem in estimating production function. It finds that firstly, the production function of the Indian auto industry has constant returns to scale, and secondly, the average growth rate of TFP per year was about 4-5%.
