Hawaiian has two counting systems, the common decimal counting system and the peculiar traditional counting system. In the Hawaiian traditional counting system, numbers are expressed by four and its multiples. The special numerals used in the traditional counting system are kāuna ‘4’, ka‘au ‘40’, lau ‘400’, mano ‘4,000’, and so on. Those special numerals have grammatical properties similar to the numerals loaned from English, such as haneli ‘100’ and kaukani ‘1,000’. They, in the same way as nouns, can occur after the plural marker mau, the plural article nā, and some possessive forms.
