Abstract

This study investigated the influence of situational factors on self-assessment motivation and self-enhancement motivation in the self-evaluation process. In particular, it was hypothesized that task-relevant events would motivate one’s self-assessment more than self-enhancement. On the other hand, socio-emotional events would motivate one’s self-enhancement more than self-assessment. Two hundred and twenty six students (undergraduates, graduate students, and nursing school students) completed a questionnaire, including a hypothetical situation on either task-relevant or socio-emotional events. The results were generally consistent with the hypothesis. The results were interpreted from the perspectives of mindset study and of self-relevant information seeking in self-evaluation process.
