Abstract

In this study, two researches were conducted to develop a scale measuring reflexive fixation on self and to reveal how reflexive fixation on self was related to self-esteem, narcissism, and impressions from a close friend. The concept of reflexive fixation on self was assumed to be composed of three factors— “diminished-self”, “enhanced-self”, and “desire for self-interest”. In Study 1, participants were 347 undergraduate students and the scale measuring assumed three factors of reflexive fixation on self (Reflective Fixation on Self Scale) was developed. The result showed that “diminished-self” and “desire for self-interest” were significantly negatively correlated to self-esteem and all three factors of reflexive fixation on self were significantly positively correlated to “a need for attention and praise” which was regarded as a maladaptive aspect of narcissism. In Study 2, participants were 106 pairs of same-sex close friends. The reproducibility of the factor structure of Reflective Fixation on Self Scale was confirmed. In addition, “diminished-self” and “enhanced-self” were significantly negatively correlated to several aspects of the impressions from a close friend. Those results were discussed in terms of social adjustment of reflexive fixation on self.
