“Journal" is one of the standard modules in the Learning Management System “Moodle"; however, not much information about how to use this module is provided in the class. Journal is like a learning diary; only the teacher/TAs can read the messages and give comments and/or advice to the students. In my class “German for Beginners," Journal works as a useful communication channel between the students and the teacher/TAs. The figures for Summer Semester 2010 say that most of the students accessed the Journal module more than twice a week. Further, 8 of the 38 students took more than 800 sessions on my course and read/wrote in the Journal 3 to 4 times a week. Every week, I would send questions and messages about the class activities, and would ask the students to write answers and comments in response to my questions/messages in the Journal. Some students asked me questions on issues pertaining to grammar that they did not understand in the class while others spoke about their campus activities, daily lives, and their personal lives. This paper makes suggestions for improving and supporting class activities using this tool.
