Abstract

The circumstances surrounding higher education have varied dramatically in recent years, and the competencies expected to be acquired through higher education are changing. At the same time, the specialization of academic research requires a broader perspective to students than ever before. Amid this background, the relationship between liberal arts education and professional education is cast in a new light, and several universities are now implementing "liberal arts education" targeted at the senior undergraduate students and graduates students. Osaka University will initiate this special program in the 2011 academic year with more than two hundred courses. In this study, the outline of the initiatives taken by Kyoto University, Kyushu University, and International Christianity University (ICU) will be shown, and the challenges in its implementation will be discussed.
