Banks started to sell a limited kind of insurance in 2001, and then the deregulation had gradually advanced. Finally, since 2007, banks are allowed to sell all kinds of insurance. This lifting of the ban has incurred a severe public debate. In order to understand recent situations, our research team conducted a survey research regarding insurance purchase of small and medium-sized enterprises in March 2012. Our questionnaire, consisting of 25 questions, was sent to 325 firms, and 185 firms responded. This paper reports its main results. The survey shows how the relationship between banks and firms affects insurance purchase of the firms. Also, our survey shows that the Great East Japan Earthquake did not significantly affect corporate demand for insurance.
