Abstract

application/pdf

Mie University has staged an annual Japanese language speech convention for overseas students since 1990. Although the primary objective of this convention is to promote students’ ability to speak Japanese, it is also a valuable opportunity to reflect on Japanese culture and customs from the perspectives of both the students and the school staff who participate. Moreover, while a Japanese speech convention is an event where the expected results of teachers’ instruction, which guides Japanese language ability, naturally appear, other outcomes are seen. They represent the efforts and achievements which weren’t visible, and so hidden from the teacher. The convention provides an opportunity for these talents to be displayed and recognized. This paper is a retrospective examination our Japanese speech conventions and the kinds of themes chosen by the overseas students. Further it examines, analyzes and summarizes the comments of judges and visitors, with a view to suggesting in what direction future conventions could be directed.
