Abstract

In Āb-e Ḥayāt (The Water of Eternal Life 1880) Muh ̣ammad Ḥusain Āzād (1830-1910) compares the poetical style of Dabīr (1803-1875) and Anīs (1803-1874), two representative masters of the Urdū marthiyah (elegy) of Lucknow. According to Āzād, in Dabīr’s poetical style stress is laid on scholarship and rhetoric while in Anīs’s poetical style emphasis is placed on limpidity. The reader expects him to oppose to the former style and support the latter, because in the introduction and introductory notes preceding each explanation of five periods of classical Urdū poetry, Āzād emphasizes the importance of limpidity in poetry. Contrary to the expectation, Āzād does not criticize Dabīr’s poetical style, but he praises both poetical styles. We can discern two parts in Āb-e Ḥayāt ; one is full of critical spirits and the other, devoid of them.
