This study investigates the legitimacy of non-registered marriage by evaluating the transformation of discourses through family studies. In Japan, after the 1980s, family studies have focused on describing the diversity of families and highlighted the increase in non-registered marriages as a primary example of the same. Liberals, who approve of diversity, tend to support the protection of non-registered marriages, whereas conservatives criticize non-registered marriages. However, upon historically examining the discourses on non-registered marriage, we find the dichotomy to be invalid, i.e., "conservatives versus liberals" have not always opposed each other. A gap exists between past and present discourses; the current discourse on non-registered marriage came about after the 1980s. This study examines how and why the transformation occurred and provides suggestions for the legal regulation of families and intimate relationships.
