Abstract

type:Article

This paper analyzes an interview aboutfamily relationships and focuses on theinfluence that family environment in childhood has on career development. The interviewee, who is a female public employee in her 20s, narrates her feelings of vague anxiety in regard to the future, in spite of the apparently satisfactory development of her career so far. There are many inconsistencies which canbe found in the interview. For example, theinterviewee talks about her desire to live onher own, but she also lists the reasons whyshe should not do so. She also claims that her parents have never done anything for herwhile admitting that there were frequentexcesses in the way that they raised her.Should her inconsistent attitude in regardto her parents, and including her complaintsagainst them, be regarded as an egoisticattitude? The interviewee's apathetic attitude towardher overprotective parents can be explainedto some extent by the psychiatric conceptof "passive aggression". According to thisconcept, she feels herself helpless becauseof overdependence on her parents. She can'texpress her anger because she dreads makingher friends and family lose the positiveimpression that they have of her.Her spiritless and indecisive, inconsistent, attitude can be further explained if it stemsfrom Sartre's for-Itself theory. We as for-Itself act in order to compensate for our lackof being. However the interviewee's parents'excessive interference always compensatesfor her lack of being before she discovers forherself what it is that she lacks. The worldbecomes "my one world" when we overcomethose things which are obstacles to therealization our potential. The intervieweeis lacking in experiences of this kind whichwould allow her to feel that the world is "herworld" which she can change by herself. Thisis the reason why she can't choose any wayexcept her attitude of passive aggression.
