The composer Shiro Kon worked creatively I Fukuoka from 1937 until his death in1977. After 1967, Kon composed works with “textural composition,” a style for musical compositions. An example is his “Polarization for Plexus of Strings” for strings and vibraphone, composed in 1972. Kon referred to the sound mass used in his textural composition as the “tone plexus.” The tone plexus, which characterizes his textural composition, can be described as follows: (1) instead of using quarter-tone clusters, a combination of whole-tone and semitone clusters is used; (2) musical instrument groups, such as violins, violas and cellos, are treated as a cluster unit; (3) the entire cluster is structured as a combination of cluster units; (4) the metrical rhythmic structure, which is not commonly found in other textural compositions, is employed in the work; and (5) the work incorporates the elements characteristic of minimal music, as observed in the simple reiteration of small units, such as phrases, figures, and motifs.
