Abstract

Muḥ ammad Ḥ usain Āzād (1830-1910), the well-known author of Āb-e Hạ yāt (The Water of Eternal Life), an epoch-making book describing a history of classical Urdū poetry published in 1880, is also a historian of the Persian language and its literature. Sukhandān-e Fārs (Poets of Persia), published in 1907, is his major work in this fi eld. In this book Āzād divided a history of Persian poetry into four periods and described it as a history of degradation: from natural poetry to artifi cial poetry. He criticized artifi ciality in poetry in this book as he did in Āb-e Hạ yāt. This book is very important to understand Āzād’s view of poetry, generally, and that of Persian poetry, particularly.
