Providing social support among older adults : A qualitative study

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate older adults’ perceptions about providing social support to one another. Twelve people aged 65 and over( 4 male, 8 female; mean age = 78.0, SD = 4.9)participated in the study. They underwent semi-structured interviews regarding attitudes about providing social support in daily life. Content analysis revealed 6 categories from positive episodes and 5 categories from negative episodes, and indicated that to a certain extent, the act of providing support is important to older adults for developing close relationships with others. However, older adults face some diffi culties despite their eagerness to help others, including limited resources for providing social support, a lack of opportunities to help others, and the reluctance to interfere in the lives of others.patients need, and whether patients need companionship.
