Is VOICE a Good Role Model for English Users in Japan?

Words, word sequences and syntactic structure which appear frequently in the Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English (VOICE) are examined in comparison with the British Academic Spoken English Corpus (BASE). Similarities and differences between these spoken corpora are examined in this paper. While really used as an intensifier! emphasizer is commonly found in both corpora, the distribution of other stance adverbs such as maybe and probably are quite distinct. Word sequences that are closely associated with the mental conditions of the speaker of the utterance are found in both corpora. However, repeated interjections do not appear frequently in BASE. Although there are not a few instances of subject-verb disagreement, VOICE speakers who use English as a lingua franca tend to fol1.ow the standard usage of English.
