Abstract
This paper reports the results of a case study on the present status of economy in pastoralism in Ladakh. The author conducted a field research focused on the mobile pastoralism of yak/yak-cattle hybrids in Domkhar Village, which is located in Sham Area, in August, 2009. Data on the composition of milking livestock, amounts of milk and dairy products, the sales of products, and the expenditure for fodder were collected and analyzed. The results indicated that 70 % of the milking livestock was composed of livestock consigned to herders by other households in the village, and that the average number of milking livestock under the ownership of the herders was only 4.8 heads/household. However, the condition of consignment is advantageous to the herders, and it seems that the herders are so far successful in maintaining the business. The potential annual income of the herders was estimated to be about 25, 000-45, 000 Rs (INR) (US$ 547-984, as of January, 2010) per household, taking into account the value of dairy products personally consumed at the herders' households. Considering the substantial workload, these amounts are not small in comparison with the amounts of income from other occupations recently practiced by the villagers of Domkhar.
