Abstract

In August 2010, a flood disaster caused by heavy rainfalls hit the Ladakh Region in northwestern India. The author studied the impacts of this flood disaster on the local society through both interviews with local residents and analysis of information gathered from different local sources. This paper firstly reviews the geographical extent of the affected areas, chronological records of the flood phenomena, response of the society immediately after the disaster, and the extent of the damages in the entire Ladakh Region. This paper then describes the experiences of the local residents in the Domkhar Village in Lower Ladakh during the disaster time, and discusses the influences of the disaster on the local community and the community's response to the disaster. In the last part of this paper, the author made the following three suggestions for the future flood management in the Ladakh Region: (1) promotion of the understanding of diverse natural phenomena related to water-induced disasters; (2) discussions on evacuation planning in local communities; and (3) a detailed study on the trends related to transformation of the population structure in the society.
