Abstract

During World War II, Saneshige Komaki, a Geography Professor at the Kyoto Imperial University, was a well-known advocate of Nihon-Chiseigaku (Japanese Geopolitics). Previous studies on his geopolitics concentrated on its chauvinistic and unscientific nature without examining the social relevance of contemporary geopolitical discourse. In this paper I examine his propaganda activities both in domestic and foreign spheres using a wide variety of original sources and clarified the following three points. (1) He successfully participated in various social activities because he had strong connections with military and intelligence authorities. (2) He emphasized the unity of the Asia-Pacific area, and insisted on its geopolitical view, which was completely different from Western -based duality. (3) Although his propaganda activities undoubtedly affected Japanese society during the war, their substantial effect remains open to debate.
