Abstract

The care worker trainees under Economic Partnership Agreements must pass State Examinations forCertified Care Workers to continue working in Japan and katakana words used in the examinations couldbe a huge barrier along with kanji words. This paper examines the frequency and trends of the katakana words that appear in the prioritized listof caregiving technical terms which had been selected in a previous study. The results show that 1)morethan 80% of the katakana words that appear in the technical term list are out of the scope of the formerJLPT , 2)more than 90% of the katakana words are English origin and some of them are WASEIEIGO(Japanized English loan words), and 3)more than 20% of the katakana words are the ones with asynonym. These results indicate that it is necessary to teach katakana words in the caregiving fieldfocusing on how WASEI EIGO and synonymous words are used.
